I was looking through my cabinets yesterday and came across some activated charcoal. And since today is Halloween, I thought it was the perfect time to experiment with black cocktails. Here are two Halloween cocktails I made. One, a current fav I thought would be perfect to make into a darker hue, and the other I just made up on the spot. Because, you know how I do it.☺️

Blackberry Bourbon Smash

Bourbon smashes put me in the mind of mojitos, only you’re using bourbon instead of rum. Smashes tend to be fruit forward and refreshing. Which is not something I usually find in a bourbon cocktail.

Ingredients

  • Blackberries
  • Mint
  • Bourbon- 2 oz
  • Activated charcoal
  • Sparkling lemonade (or you can use your fav seltzer beverage- soda water, ginger ale, etc.)

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker
  2. Muddle together, being careful not to overdo it on the mint (could lead to bitterness)
  3. Strain into your cocktail glass over ice
  4. Top off with sparkling lemonade- I used San Pellegrino limonata
  5. Garnish with a spring of mint (give it a gentle slap first to release the aroma) and fresh blackberries

Boo-Berry Lemonade: 👻

I‘m always in the mood for something citrusy, so I thought blueberry lemonade would make a perfect base for a Halloween cocktail. I’m using an egg white to give it more body and a foamy top- I think it adds to the ambience. And to make it even more festive, I added some silver edible glitter to make it sparkly.

Personally, I think it’s a winner and shall be making more of these.

Ingredients:

  • Blueberries
  • Hendricks Lunar Gin- 2 oz.
  • St. Germain- 1/2 oz
  • Lemon juice- 1/2 ox
  • Activated charcoal
  • Egg White- 1
  • Sparkling Lemonade
  • Edible glitter *optional

Directions:

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a cocktail shaker with no ice
  2. Muddle well to break down the blueberries and get charcoal mixed
  3. Add in egg white and edible glitter & shake well for at least 15-30 secs for a nice foamy head
  4. Strain into your cocktail glass
  5. Top off with sparkling lemonade
  6. Garnish with a lemon wheel and/or blueberries

The camera doesn’t quite capture the sparkle, but it’s very pretty and shimmery.
