Ritual Zero Proof Whiskey AlternativeAs I mentioned in my previous blog, I’m participating in Dry January for the first time ever this year. In doing so, I’ve been exploring the world of mocktails & other non-alcoholic beverage options (other than water, juice, & soft drinks). Just because someone is abstaining from alcohol, doesn’t mean they have to have boring drink options. Not only has my research yielded 5 delicious mocktail recipes, but I’ve discovered legit, non-alcohol beverage options exist. So of course, I had to give them a try. First up is the Ritual Zero Proof’s Whiskey Alternative.

The Top Notes:

  • Has a uniquely warm & mellow-y sweet nose. Sorta reminiscent of a spiced raisin, with a whiff of white grape or apple.
  • Was expecting a bit of spice on the nose, but didn’t detect any.
  • Taste wise, it has a light, thin mouth feel. Not overwhelming, easy to get down.
  • Initially, there’s a distinct warm sweetness on the tongue, followed immediately by a wave of spice on the back of the throat.

Overall Impressions:

Not what I was expecting from a “whiskey alternative”, however, it’s quite serviceable. To be fair, Ritual Zero Proof Whiskey Alternative is my first experience with an alcohol replacement, so expectations *may* have been a bit high in expecting an exact whiskey replica. It has a light bouquet, with a predominant golden, mellow sweet scent, whereas I associate more of a woody, char, caramel nose with whiskey and bourbon. It also doesn’t have a ton of body (mouthfeel wise) or dragon (i.e. burn), but it does have a hint of char and a definite bite of heat in each sip.

I’m not a fan of it neat. Though to be fair, I’m not sure it’s intended to be drank neat. However, because of its unique taste profile, I do enjoy it in smoked and spiced whiskey mocktails. (e.g. chai or apple cider Old Fashioneds and sours).

My full video review featuring the unboxing, my first sip ,and tasting notes of Ritual Zero Proof Whiskey Alternative. is included above. Plus I included a few of the whiskey mocktails I made.

Happy Dry January to those participating and continued success on your journey!
