In the beginning of my Dry January journey, one of my social media associates suggested I give Wilderton Free Botanical Distillate a try. After perusing their site, I knew I had to try their Earthen non-alcohol spirit. With promised notes of smoky earthiness and spice, I had a feeling I’d like it.

You can catch the video of the full review above with my honest initial reactions to its bouquet and taste. But here’s my overall thoughts on Wilderton Free Earthen.

Top Notes:

  • Earthen is a deliciously unique beverage. It’s very earthy and smokey on both the nose and tongue
  • Taste wise, I got an unexpected initial hit of lemon, followed by herbaceous smoky notes, ending with a nice spice hit
  • Mouthfeel is thin and watery, not much body.
  • I found Earthen to be delicious on its own and easy to drink

Overall Impressions:

One whiff of Wilder Free Earthen and I was instantly transported to an apothecary or incense shop. Notes of Frankincense and Patchouli hit me right off, followed up with a smoky tea herbaceousness. One would think this combo would be overwhelming, but it’s not. It’s quite light and relaxing.

Taste wise, Earthen is probably the most unique thing I’ve ever had. There is an initial light, bright lemon hit, followed up by an herbaceous smokiness that I found to be simply delicious. I detected a hint rose on the finish acting as a harmonious component which tied all the flavors together. The combined nose & taste of Earthen has me seriously thinking a Djinn had a hand in it’s creation.😉 If you’re a fan of woody herbals, grounded smokiness, and flavorful spice, you’ll probably like this drink.

Mocktails:

I had a great time experimenting with Earthen. Due to its uniquely complex palette, I enjoyed it in simple applications that allowed its flavor to shine. Using a variety of sparkling waters and flavors, I made quite a few simple tonics.

Strawberry Rose Tonic

  • 1 oz Earthen
  • 1/4 oz lime
  • few drops of rose water
  • Sparkling strawberry water- top off

Hibiscus Tonic

  • 1 0z Earthen
  • 1/4 oz lime
  • bar spoon of Hibiscus syrup
  • San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water- top off

Earthen Sipper

  • 1.75 oz Earthen
  • San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water- top off

Spicy Earth Tonic

  • 2 oz jalapeno infused Earthen (soaked overnight in peppers)
  • 1/4 oz lime juice
  • Sparkling watermelon coconut water- top off

Note: I really enjoyed the jalapeño infused Earthen. I happened to have some fresh blood orange juice on hand so I made a Spicy Blood Orange tonic that is, hands down, my absolute favorite beverage to make with Earthen.
